Kickdrums - Video & Free Mixtapes

Cleveland's own Kickdrums have been a favorite of mine for some time... Though I haven't had the pleasure of seeing them yet. I've been meaning to post this video for a couple weeks now, but today is the day. Particularly because I also just found out that they are offering up a 3 volume mix-tape called the Indio Sessions (Coachella). Dont' really have much of a story behind it - but it's got some amazing artists. And if they mixed this as well as they mix their own stuff - watch out: http://thekickdrums.bandcamp.com/

Kickdrums Make a Three-Part Mixtape

Cleveland's supercool DJ team the Kickdrums have just released a three-part mixtape called The Indio Sessions.

The mixes, which you can downlaod here, are based on the Coachella music fest, so there's plenty of music-snob-approved tunes and artists.

MGMT, Passion Pit, Spoon and Yeasayer all make appearances.

Seriously — you should go download them now. You'll be cooler than Hipster Kitty.—Michael Gallucci (follow me on Twitter @mgallucci)

Some Joe Pug Updates...

Get a free download of "The Sharpest Crown" from his new release, Messenger, coming out on February 16th, 2010. I'm very excited about this release, and hopes he comes back to Cleveland again.

Also, he's got a new YouTube channel if you're you're into that kind of thing... http://www.youtube.com/user/joepugmusic

Soundcheck Sessions

We finally made the dubious purchase of a video camera, so we'll be posting some updates from the tour on my You Tube Channel. The first installment is something called "Soundcheck Sessions". On tour your nightly sound check ends up functioning as your rehearsal, so it's your time to try out new ideas, new songs, etc. It's also your time to screw up mightily. We're going to post a few nuggets from time to time, for good or for ill. The first installment is a version of "Nobody's Man" from Des Moines, IA last night. My full band made the trip to Chicago, and it's always a nice treat to play with them, so we dialed in the "loud" treatment of the song. You can check it out here.

Free Unsparing Sea Show this Friday

Thanks to the Cleveland Bachelor for this one! I unfortunately missed Unsparing Sea's opening performance at Edward Sharpe (and may have to miss this one). But you should definitely get out and enjoy the redeveloping Detroit Shoreway and this Made in the 216 event.

Their new album comes out on Nov. 24th, and you can download a couple free tracks from it here.

Messengers Mixtape / K'Naan, J.Period, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti

And since I'm on the topic of rap I'll share another great artist with you. K'naan is a native born Somalian who is also extremely talented. His last two albums have had some stellar tracks on them and are both worthy in their own right. Well, he's also offering up a free copy of The Messengers, which is a compilation of 3 EP's dedicated to 3 remarkable artists.

The way he weaves his sound in with these artists - especially Bob Dylan - is amazing. You should get this. Did I mention it was FREE?

WRUW'S 28TH ANNUAL STUDIO-A-RAMA

Sorry I'm going to have to miss this yet again... But you shouldn't!

MISSION OF BURMA TO HEADLINE WRUW'S 28TH ANNUAL STUDIO-A-RAMA SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 5TH

WRUW is proud to announce that the legendary MISSION OF BURMA will be headlining WRUW's 28th annual Studio-A-Rama!!!

Now in its 28th year, Studio-A-Rama is WRUW's annual FREE, outdoor, day-long rock concert. This year's headliners is Boston 's post-punk pioneers Mission Of Burma!!!

Mission Of Burma have been releasing music since 1979, including 1983's legendary "Vs.". After an almost 20 year hiatus, Mission Of Burma returned to issue 2002's "OnoffON" and 2006's "The Obliterati". Their newest release "The Sound, The Speed, The Light" is set to be released in October, so expect Mission Of Burma to play some new songs from that release as well as songs from their classic catalog.

Studio-A-Rama, WRUW's annual free, outdoor 10 hour rock show, is both a thank you to WRUW listeners and a testement to WRUW's commitment to live (and free) music. The concert begins at 2:00PM in the Mather Memorial Courtyard (11220 Bellflower Rd. , Cleveland OH , 44106), outside the studios of WRUW. The full concert line-up is as follows:

2:00PM - Chief Bromide (noisy guitar rock)
3:00PM - Neon Tongues (punky garage pop)
4:00PM - Flowers In Flames (dark psychedelic goth rock)
5:00PM - Uno Lady (solo voice manipulation)
6:00PM - The Kyle Sowashes (indie pop from Columbus )
7:00PM - Mike St. Jude and the Valentines (rock'n'roll)
8:00PM - Kid Tested (noisy power pop)
9:00PM - Megachurch (dual bass driving rock with tape loops)
10:00PM to Midnight - MISSION OF BURMA !!!

The entire show shall be simulcast over 15,000 watts ( Ohio 's most powerful college radio station) on 91.1 FM, and also webcast around the world on www.wruw.org.

Studio-A-Rama also demonstrates WRUW's commitment to local and regional music, giving 7 bands the opportunity to play before hundreds of people, opening for a national headliner. Again, all bands will be heard over the radio at 91.1FM and over the internet at www.wruw.org.

Since 1982, WRUW has staged this free annual concert designed to thank listeners for their ongoing support throughout the year, and especially during WRUW's annual telethon. An enthusiastic audience response during the annual on-air fundraiser enables WRUW to continue hosting Studio-A-Rama as well as fund live webcasting and support local music and live music. Studio-A-Rama is one part of WRUW-FM's commitment to broadcasting local bands live. The "Live From Cleveland" show broadcasts bands from the WRUW-FM studios every Thursday evening from 10 until 11pm, and WRUW also simulcasts the live music from the main stage of the annual Hessler St. Fair.

Holy Crap! NPR Offers Downloads from Newport Folk Festival!

NPR continues to amaze me. I saw they posted a bunch of entries about artists at the Newport Folk Festival, but I didn't realize they were offering MP3 downloads of each performance. Brilliant.

Here are the best ones (so far):

Download RĂłisĂn Murphy (and others) - I'm Every Woman (FREE)

And help a good cause...

Action Aid's Six Degrees of Separation present: I'm Every Woman from 6Degrees on Vimeo.

To support Action Aid and download this song for free, please visit: http://www.actionaid.org.uk/6degrees/?page=free-download

Based on the theory of 6 Degrees o Separation, the project is bringing women in the UK together with women living in poverty, in the fight for women's rights and an end to the violence they face.

The single, I'm Every Woman, is a cover of the Chaka Khan classic, but with 6 artists as innovative, exciting and individual as Amanda Ghost, Michachu, Roisin Murphy, CockNBullKid, Alessi's Ark and Sinead O'Conner - this was never going to be a straight rendition.

Flipping the original on its head, I'm Every Woman is a call to action, echoing the sentiments of 6 Degrees that whatever is going on in the world, we're in it together

Download Free Pitchfork Artists from RCRDLBL (M83)

Don't forget to be checking out RCRDLBL for a bunch of Pitchfork Music Festival artist downloads all week! I've never heard M83 before, but I'm looking forward to seeing them.

Have you heard of this guy M83? Oh, right, he’s huge. Essential listening if you’re going on a cross-country road trip and scrolling through your phone to dial up ex-loves.“We Own The Sky” has got me fantasizing. That staccato blink, that planetarium spring, that slip and slide chorus—man I hope Pitchfork sets up an enormous dome where he’ll shoegaze on Sunday under the cover of celestial explosions, star belts and chocolate milk fountains.

Stream the new Dodo's "Time to Die"

dodos.png

So I guess the new Dodo's album leaked out on the internet, so they decided to stream the full album online here. They also posted a video explaining this, and they're obviously not crazy about it happening. Truthfully, I didn't realize it leaked until they told me! It sounds good though, check it out (however you like)

The Dodos stream new album online

Josh Ritter (7/7/09)

This show had been a long time coming. He's one of the few artists left who I've really enjoyed and had not yet seen perform live. To think about it, I can't think of any left off hand. Hmm.. Anyway.

Prior to the show I received an email about Joe Pug, who was opening for Ritter. Linked was a free download of his EP "In The Meantime."
I liked it, but leading up to the day of the show I *really* started to like it. His performance just emphasized for me how impressive on an artist he is, and having not actually seen what he looks like before the show, he's younger and more attractive than I was expecting! :-) Unfortunately I didn't get any good pics of him. Next time. Until then, check out "Nation of Heat" below and his Daytrotter performance.

Josh Ritter emphatically took the stage. Kinda surprising almost, but glad to see he was so jovial. The place was packed and was quite happy to see this Oberlin graduate back in the area. Even Elyria, Lorain and Parma got shout outs. Despite how loud the show was, Josh sounded great. I wasn't expecting to need my ear plugs for his show, but they would have come in handy. Overall, I wish I had seen him 5 years ago before he started filling the Beachland Ballroom, in smaller, more intimate environments. I'd still see him again.

Josh Ritter (7/7/09)

Oh, download Joe Pug's EP for yourself:

Download New Avett Brothers Song

In case you missed it, Spinner put up a track from the new Avett Brothers album, being released in September. Good stuff.

The Avett Brothers, 'I and Love and You' -- Free MP3 Download

They might be from North Carolina, but the Avett Brothers' new single finds them in a Brooklyn state of mind. 'I and Love and You,' the title track for their new album, is a piano ballad soaked in folk flavor, crying "Brooklyn, Brooklyn, take me in." Makes sense, since the song was inspired by a gig at Brooklyn's Galapagos. "It was the coolest place we'd ever been, and the furthest from home we'd ever been in every sense," Scott Avett tells Spinner. "So the Brooklyn chorus kind of embodies the rest of the lyrics."

Download 'I and Love and You' below, exclusively on Spinner.

Free Fleet Foxes Download at RCRDLBL

I almost passed this free download up because I'm kinda tired of hearing about Fleet Foxes. I think they're good & all, but sometimes I get name burnout. But for some reason I paused with this track and I'm glad I did. I'll have to go back and check out this Sun Giant EP.

Download the song and watch the video.
